The 2nd Annual 3D Throwdown at MCRC by Jim Kitt
RC pilots came to share their enthusiasm for 3D flying at the Second Annual 3D Throwdown at MCRC. Held this year on Saturday, January 28th the weather was accommodating at 74 degrees and sunny.... (more...)

Predicting Amps in an Electric RC Power Setup by Jim Kitt
Since I am often pushing the edges of the envelope when powering my 3D airframes, I have devised a way to predict both Amps and Watts using some basic formulas. By plugging in variables to this formula – like propeller diameter and pitch, the number of battery cells, and the Kv rating of my motor – I can generate an accurate Amp range that eliminates the guesswork and danger from trying a new power combo for the first time... Propeller Performance Analysis by Jim Kitt & Lee Paddock
In late October, 2011, a study was initiated to determine the measurable differences between six propellers of the same length and pitch specifications, from different manufactures... (more...)

My Young RC Life by Skylor Fleenor
The main reasons I enjoy this hobby is because I have to know a lot about the aerodynamics of each plane, wind currents, different plane configurations and setups, etc. You never stop learning! I am amazed how I have gone from flying little Air Hogs to flying a five foot trainer in a matter of a few months!(more...) |

Electrifly Super Sportster: Online Review by Tom Kitt
For new pilots who are finding their high wing trainer a little too easy, or even for intermediate and advanced pilots who want an easy to fly sport plane for Sunday mornings, the ElectriFly Super Sportster proves to be an excellent choice. (more...) |

Electric Conversion Revisted by Jim Kitt
The Electronic Speed Controller (ESC), the internal and external Battery Elimination Circuit (BEC), and internal resistance and its affects on efficiency, are revisited in this continuation of the original Electric Conversion article. (more...) |

Spiffing Up a Spitfire by Tony Iannucelli
Tony Iannucelli was thrilled with the looks of his Hangar 9 .60-size Spitfire, but he wanted to personalize it with invasion stripes and electric retracts. Check out his ARF adventure (more...)

Ten Minute Side Force Genertors That Work by Jim Kitt
He said that he fashioned them around the spill plates on TF dragster wings. They also reminded me of wing fences on early jets, such as the MIG’s, that were used to stop lateral flow on swept back wings at lower speeds, especially during landing. Bill said, “I did notice that I could get the plane to "snap out" in certain instances with the stock SFG’s and it just won’t do it with these. They help in Harrier and general flight and really locks it in to knife edge. They basically take a great 3D plane and make it better.” (more...)

The New Economics of our Radio Control Hobby by Tony Iannucelli
The economics of radio control changed drastically for me a few years ago when I discovered Hobby King. I know some of you guys think they sell junk, and also that a lot of what they sell is so inexpensive it simply can’t be good. Well, I’ve got a long list of items that I’ve purchased from them, and my experiences have (more...) |

20th Annual MCRC Dick Coles Memorial IMAA Fly-In by Tom Kitt
Before we knew it, it was noon and time for the demos. As Tony Ianucelli flew his scale model of an MD-500 helicopter with camo colors, scale missle pods, and a .90 size glow helicopter motor, I readied my Velox for my freestlye demo. When Tony finished his impressive flight, I took to the air with Aerosmith's "Devil's Got a New Disguise" playing in the background. After I landed everybody was safe to get out of their "take cover" positions and stare in awe at Troy Hawthorne's giant scale model of the legendary B-17G Flying Fortress. (more...)

My Electric Adventure by Tony Iannucelli
Twenty some years ago I wanted to try an electric model airplane. In those days we were sold geared “Cobalt” motors and heavy NiCad batteries as the answer to electric flight. Most airframes available were old timers and motor gliders, and they were true kits. There were no performance aircraft available as the weight of the power system would relegate higher wing loaded airframes to taxi practice. I had a nice electric “Playboy”, a kit by Bob Boucher, and I wish I had the plane today. Its limitation was that silly motor and battery. I did manage a few short flights, but they weren’t much more than takeoffs followed by immediately lining up for landings. It was a porker because of the battery. Fast forward to 2011. (more...) |

3D for Dummies by Jim Kitt
In order to perform the basic 3D maneuvers, such as harriers, rolling harriers, elevators, rolling loops, inverted flat spins, and something called an Enemas, a tail heavy airplane with about a 45 degree elevator throw, is required. Since most RC pilots fear the tail heavy setup, this came as shock to me when my son, Tom, set up the control surfaces and CG to accommodate his radical 3D style of flying. Every moment of my first flight involved all the concentration I could muster. (more...) |

Zen and the Falcon by Jim Kitt
In life, there is one point in time where all living things are at their esthetic apex. All time and events prior to this apex is preparatory time spent in the attainment of that moment. All events and time thereafter are spent living in the shadow of its life-defining majesty. In the mind of a boy, such a moment was nearly achieved by a father and son nearly forty years ago. It went by the wayside because it was never recognized for its true potential: a shining concert of flight, witnessed by a father and his son bound by the shared process of creation. This time, it may look different, but once it is airborne and in-trim, it will, at that moment, achieve that apex of perfection, regardless of any and all events that may follow. (more...) |

Barnstorming for Toys by Jim Kitt
It was all about the Kids, in more ways than one, during the 2009 Barnstorming for Toys event at the MCRC flying field in Palmetto, Florida. Nine year old Jonathan Bryans and thirteen year old Tommy Kitt, provided both entertainment and excitement for the large crowd that showed up to support the 2009 Toy Drive for the needy children of Manatee County. Electric Conversion by Jim Kitt
The process of matching the right components to a new model is a bit time consuming, but in this economy, I would rather spend the time, than the money. In many instances, it is cheaper to find an airframe that suits my electronic components than the other way around. (more...) |
